NEW ARRIVALS

“What did you do?” Kyle asked as we sat in the dining hall for our daily ‘lunch’ date. Blake was suddenly glued to Obi's side, and Kyle noticed the change. Blake regarded Obi with a look of reverence, as though he were the most precious thing in the world, and Kyle immediately started hounding me about my involvement in the change. Since Alexander had left earlier, he had taken it upon himself to get some answers.

“I told you, I didn’t really do much. They just hadn’t given each other a proper chance. They are meant for each other, the perfect balance. They see that now,” I said, sipping the glass of warm blood. It wasn’t Sterling’s and didn’t taste nearly as good, but he insisted that I start drinking it. I swear, the first time I nearly hurled. It’s bad enough not being able to drink it from the source, but slurping it up like it was a damn cup of orange juice made the experience even worse.

But I did what I was told. Even if I fucking hated it. It was worth it to hear him call me a ‘good boy’ in that teasing low timber. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t suddenly become okay with the power dynamic and the condescension that came with those words, but it was like an ongoing joke between us. On the outside, everyone saw a fledgling totally besotted with their Master, being the picture of obedience. The reality was far from it. I challenged Sterling every step of the way, sometimes for no good reason other than to condition myself to push through the physical discomfort of disobeying him.

I was no one’s slave.

Besides, Sterling liked it. It kept him on his toes. Our bond became more stable now that he viewed us on equal grounds. He won’t admit it, but I knew he didn’t view fledglings as equals. Not because he’s some pretentious asshole–even though he could be on occasion–but because of the way the hierarchy worked. It was like a child and parent rather than partners. That's how it’s always been and that’s how all Vampires and fledglings alike, view their bonds. The strong ones…the true partners…they knew. Just because something had been ingrained into society, didn’t make it right, something he’s started to grasp.

As much as everyone avoided admitting it, that’s what set Asher and Cadence apart from the rest. Stasia’s bond with them was strong because they viewed the twins as equals. It was obvious in the way Stasia spoke to them, behaved around them. If my senses didn’t know any better, I would have thought that they were full blown Vampires at this point.

“What Stage are Asher and Cadence in?” I asked, cutting Kyle off mid rant about something I admit, I was not paying attention to. Most likely Blake, he seemed to be fixated on that whole situation. Though I think the only reason he kept talking about it was because Alexander wasn’t there to bring it up himself.
